Houston has 500-plus electrical jobs on the table next month, and you can walk in with a résumé.

Bechtel will hold a job fair on November 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., hosted by the Houston City College Alumni Association. It is open to the general community, current students, and alumni, and the event page lists more than 400 electrician and journey-level positions plus more than 100 helper and apprentice openings. Registration is required, and on-the-spot interviews are possible.

The data center boom is a wiring job first and a software job second.

Why Electricians Are the Bottleneck

A CSIS analysis of AI infrastructure labor estimates that every megawatt of AI data center capacity takes about 1,800 electrician-hours, far more than a traditional facility. In its high-growth scenario, the U.S. needs more than 140,000 additional skilled-trade workers by 2030 beyond normal growth. BLS projects about 81,000 electrician openings a year through 2034.

Bechtel's leadership has made the same point. CEO Brendan Bechtel has named electricians, pipefitters, welders, and heavy-equipment operators as the trades that will set how fast big projects get delivered, according to an August report from Construction Owners.

Pay and Pathways

CSIS reports that electricians with data center experience can earn $80,000 to $120,000 a year in field work. Apprenticeships take four to five years, so the on-ramp matters. Starting apprentice wages can fall short of living costs in expensive metros, which is worth asking about before you sign on.

Tech Money Is Funding the Pipeline

Hyperscalers are paying to grow the pool of trained workers. In April 2025, Google.org announced funding for the electrical training ALLIANCE, created by the IBEW and NECA, with a goal of training 100,000 electrical workers and adding 30,000 apprentices nationwide. In November 2025, Google said its Texas effort would train more than 1,700 apprentices by 2030, which it estimates would raise the state's projected pipeline of new electricians by nearly 110%.

Neither announcement says how to apply, so start with your local IBEW or NECA training center.

The Bottom Line

If you are in the Houston area and have electrical experience, or want a way into the trade, register for the Bechtel fair and bring a résumé. The event page lists two venues (HCC Central Campus and a West Loop Campus), so confirm the location before you go. Everywhere else, the same advice holds: call your local apprenticeship program, ask about starting pay, and ask which employers are hiring now.
