Mason County, Kentucky just learned who is building its biggest project ever, and the trades are about to get very busy.

On October 13, county officials named Meta as the company behind a hyperscale data center campus near Maysville. The fiscal court approved the agreements that day, and the numbers are large for a rural river county: an initial capital investment of $10 billion, with room to grow in later phases.

The Jobs on Paper

Meta's announcement puts construction employment at more than 4,000 skilled trade jobs at peak. Once the campus is running, it expects more than 300 permanent operations jobs, with the possibility of up to 400. County officials have cited slightly different totals in local interviews, so expect the numbers to firm up as phases are scheduled.

A project this size does not just hire workers. It tells a whole region which skills are worth learning next.

Which Trades Are Needed

Construction will draw steelworkers, pipefitters, electricians, carpenters, and fiber technicians. After opening, the permanent roster includes electricians, HVAC specialists, server and network technicians, safety and security professionals, and engineers. Plans call for up to six data center buildings and three substations, so the electrical work alone could be steady for years.

Who Is Powering It

East Kentucky Power Cooperative will serve the campus under its large-load rate structure. Meta says it will pay the full cost of the power it uses, plus the upgrades needed to deliver it. An East Kentucky Power spokesman called the project a "transformative investment in jobs and infrastructure" for the region.

Beyond the Jobs

Meta has also committed about $115 million to roads, water treatment, and water pipelines, along with $15 million for public safety and annual payments to the county and its school district. The company says it will invest in schools and workforce training as well, though specific programs have not yet been announced.

How to Get Ready

If you live within driving distance of northern Kentucky or southern Ohio, start with the basics. Ask your local IBEW, pipefitters, and carpenters training centers how they plan to staff the project. Check with community and technical colleges about electrical, HVAC, and fiber programs. Then watch Meta's careers page and the Maysville-Mason County economic development office for hiring notices as construction schedules are set.

The Bottom Line

Four thousand construction jobs will not wait for the workforce to catch up. The people who line up apprenticeships and certifications now will be first in line when the cranes arrive. Pay attention to Mason County: the training announcements will be the next signal.
