The future of American energy will be built by hand. Last week, four companies that rarely share a stage made that point together.

BlackRock, Carhartt, Ford and Google launched the Alliance for America's Skilled Trades, a partnership built around a simple fact: an estimated 2.1 million skilled trades positions could go unfilled by 2030. Electrical workers. Technicians. Builders. The people who build, operate and maintain the systems the rest of us depend on.

The commitments are real

This is not a press release alliance. The founding members put numbers on the table:

  • BlackRock is committing $100 million through its Future Builders initiative to connect 50,000 workers to training over five years.
    • Ford is investing $300 million in skilled trades workforce development in 2026 alone, part of Jim Farley's push to champion what he calls the Essential Economy, the 95 million Americans who build, move and fix.
    • Google is putting $50 million into training programs that reach more than 300,000 workers across 14 labor unions and 20+ states.
    • Carhartt has supported more than 60 organizations through its For the Love of Labor program since 2022.

Together, the founding members already support training initiatives in 30 states. The playbook has three pillars: build the pipeline, scale what works (apprenticeships, pre-apprenticeships, earn and learn programs), and expand the partnership across industry, labor, education and nonprofits.

Why this matters for energy

Every conversation about America's energy future ends in the same place: people. New generation, new transmission, new data centers, grid modernization. None of it happens without linemen, electricians, welders and technicians. The trades shortage is an energy problem, and the energy buildout is a trades opportunity.

These are careers, not consolation prizes. Above average wages and benefits. No four year degree required. Clear pathways from apprenticeship to mastery. As demand for power grows, the value of the people who deliver it grows with it.
