The AI buildout needs power fast, and the people who keep the batteries running are suddenly the ones in short supply.

On August 7, Energy Vault announced a strategic agreement to deploy 1.25 gigawatts of integrated power infrastructure for hyperscaler AI data centers, with the initial deployment backed by a hyperscaler customer contract in Texas. The company expects first deployments over the next four to twelve months. That is not a 2030 promise. That is a hiring plan.

Ten days earlier, Energy Vault broke ground in Snyder, Texas on a powered AI infrastructure campus for Crusoe. Same story: batteries, generation, and controls going in the ground right now.

What the Job Is

BESS techs keep utility-scale battery installations running. They commission new racks, test and troubleshoot power conversion systems, run preventive maintenance, monitor thermal and fire safety systems, and respond when a site trips offline. Increasingly the work sits alongside solar arrays and gas generation on hybrid sites, so techs learn the whole plant rather than one box.

Salary Snapshot

Nationally, BESS technician postings run roughly $21 to $57 per hour. In Texas, where the buildout is thickest, ZipRecruiter puts average BESS pay at $60.29 per hour, with most listings landing between $50.14 and $69.18. Step up into energy storage engineering and the national average climbs to about $116,916 a year.

Who's a Fit

Electrical fundamentals matter most: DC systems, switchgear, inverters, and safe high voltage work. Plenty of techs arrive from the military, HVAC, industrial maintenance, or solar operations and maintenance. Employers want OSHA and NFPA 70E training, comfort with SCADA and monitoring software, and a willingness to drive to rural sites. A two-year technical degree or an apprenticeship gets you in the door. A journeyman electrician card gets you in faster.

Every gigawatt of AI compute announced this summer comes with a power plant attached. OpenAI's Project Camellia in Effingham County, Georgia contracted 3.2 gigawatts from Georgia Power for phased delivery between 2028 and 2032, and committed $80 million toward local priorities including workforce training. The megawatts get the headlines. The technicians get the jobs.
